THE WALK

Lamplighter

Your journey begins at the Lamplighter shop in Bishopston, a charming white and black building with a welcoming ambiance.

**Head South**: Begin by heading south, walking straight along the road for about 5 minutes. You’ll soon pass a horse chestnut tree, which is lush and green in the summer, standing beside Vensland Road.

**Pyle Corner**: Continue on this path, descending slightly towards Pyle Corner. When you reach the bus stop, carefully cross the road and proceed downhill.

**Pwll Du Lane**: Upon reaching Pwll Du Lane, you’ll notice a post office on your right. Turn right onto this narrow road—stay alert for passing cars.

**Backingstone Lane**: After a short walk, you’ll reach a small junction. Stay on the main path, passing a picturesque thatched house. This road is Backingstone Lane, which is signposted towards Southgate.

**Through the Tunnel of Trees**: As you continue, the road curves to the left, leading you through a dark, enchanting tunnel of trees. In the spring, the fresh scent of wild garlic fills the air.

**Backingstone Chapel**: You’ll pass Backingstone Chapel, an ancient structure where monks once lived and sang. Keep following the lane for about 10 minutes, passing a beautiful black gate on your right.

**Footpath to the Woods**: Look out for a footpath sign where the road is marked with “END, PRIVATE.” Turn right here, heading downhill towards the woods. The path can be muddy, so wearing wellies is advisable. This path leads into the ancient woodland of Bishopston Valley, known as an ancient Holloway.

**Iron Bridge**: At the bottom of the track, you’ll find a metal gate. Pass through and head right down a steep, rocky path. Soon, you’ll hear and see the river. Cross the muddy clearing towards the iron bridge. After crossing the bridge, turn left and follow the path along the river.

**Corner Junction**: Upon reaching a clearing at a corner junction, continue left, following the soothing sounds of the river.

**Haol Lane**: After reaching another similar clearing, turn right this time, away from the river, onto a stony path called Haol Lane. Continue following signs to Southgate.

**Through the Farm**: Walk for about 5 minutes until you reach a wooden gate. Continue straight and begin the ascent up another steep, rocky path. After 10 minutes, you’ll exit the woodland, arriving at a farm gate. Carefully pass through, ensuring to close the gate behind you as there may be animals nearby. You’ll pass Haol Farm on your right and a pond on your left.

**Gravel Track and Cattle Grid**: Continue along a gravel track, passing through a wooden gate, and bid farewell to the cows! Soon, you’ll approach a metal gate and a cattle grid—keep straight ahead. The path will open up, passing a bungalow on your left.

**Southgate**: At the junction, turn left, following the curve of the road. As you proceed, you’ll pass rows of houses on a tarmac road. Stay on this road as it bends and winds.

**Final Stretch**: As you near the end of the walk, you’ll be rewarded with stunning views of Oxwich Point to your left and Cefn Bryn ahead. Continue along the road until you arrive at the **Three Cliffs Coffee Shop**.

Enjoy a well-deserved rest and perhaps a cup of coffee after your scenic walk!
